March 10, 2008 -- Youth Contest Celebrity JudgesPress Release CARP, ON: Diefenbunker, Canada’s Cold War Museum has confirmed two celebrity judges for its “Lessons from the Cold War: A Youth Writing Contest.” The two are Major-General (Retired) Lewis Mackenzie, C.M., CMM, MSC (and bar), O.Ont , CD and local author Tim Wynne-Jones. Mackenzie served in the Canadian Forces for 35 years, rising to the rank of Major-General and playing an important role in UN peacekeeping efforts in the former Yugoslavia. After retiring from the military in 1993, Mackenzie published his experiences in the best-selling Peacekeeper: Road to Sarajevo. A Member of the Order of Canada, he is a regular public commentator on security and military affairs. Wynne-Jones and has written over two dozen books both for children and adults, twice winning the Governor-General’s Award for children’s literature. In addition to winning other awards, his works have been translated into 9 languages. His two Rex Zero novels for young adults deal with the Cold War and feature the Diefenbunker. He now resides in Perth. The writing contest features a prize of $1000 for the essay or creative writing piece that best illustrates how the Cold War has affected contemporary national or global politics and/or society. The contest is open to students in grade 11, 12, Sec V or Cegep I. The submission deadline is April 1 and the prize will be awarded on May 18 (International Museum day).
